Aspen Forest Update

A 1980’s tract house with low ceilings, narrow hallways and the typical small, enclosed Living Room/Dining Room/Kitchen was very dated.  The kitchen was under-scaled for the house and storage was at a premium.  The client had to walk through the Mud Room and go outside to access the Garage.  In reviewing the structure, it was ascertained that the Kitchen and Family Room sat under the lean-to roof at the back of the salt box style house.  The entire main floor was blown out.  All walls were removed and necessary structural work was completed.  The entry is now defined by a glass box Office with black, industrial trims.  Bar and glassware was relocated to the Dining Room wall along with a wine fridge and specialized liquor storage.  The Kitchen was expanded significantly with the inclusion of a large island that can seat the entire family.  Traffic patterns were combined so that instead of walking through the Family Room to a sliding patio door to access the back yard, an existing window opening was repurposed to become a door, and the patio doors became windows – making the Family Room much more functional.  The Garage door was relocated to the Mudroom, and custom cabinetry in that space made coats and sports equipment much more manageable.  Without question, the most transformative change in the project was that the ceiling in the Family Room and Kitchen was lifted to follow the slope of the roofline, resulting in a gorgeous, light filled open plan solution far more suitable to a young, active family.
